Sierra Leone has a very informal but highly effective foster parent culture. One that allows any parent to entrust their child into the care of someone they believe can help create a better life for that child.
That is the story of Max & Ada Bailor, a humble couple whose love for people and education transcended every cultural and tribal barrier that one could imagine existed in Sierra Leone at the time. As the youngest son of their union, I had front row seats to a life of exemplary leadership, loyalty, love for people, and a laser-focused dedication to improving the lives of others.
Before I came to the United States in 1989 for college, I do not recall ever living with less than 20 people in our home. This is because that is how Max and Ada lived their lives – generously. They were not rich by any means, but we grew up hearing, “The Lord will provide,” and provide he did. There was always food at home, and we never lacked decent clothing. They were both highly active in the church and in the community.
For over 25 years, they had the privilege of serving as principle and vice principle of the Albert Academy, a prestigious high school in Sierra Leone. This unique distinction created the perfect opportunity for them to live out their passion for education and for loving and helping people.
The Max & Ada Bailor Education Foundation was created by their children (natural and foster) to continue their legacy of enriching the lives of both children and adults by providing quality educational opportunities and supporting programs and initiatives that position them for future success.
It is my sincere prayer that you will help us continue Max & Ada’s legacy by partnering with us to help fill in the gaps and create a better future for all.
